Pulling on lead......
Hi. My staffy is 14 months old and he pulls on the lead especially if we need to go past people or dogs, but the problem is he is getting stronger every day and harder for me to take out with me as i have to take my 5 kids out aswell. Ive tried everything harnesses, choke collars, treats, stopping and walking opposite direction, so now i dont know what to do. how am i supposed to take him for walks if i get pulled across the road with the dog, double pram and the 3 other kids hangin off the pram??? Any suggestions

Re: Pulling on lead......
Have you tried a halti? Roxy is a puller to but with the halti she is loads better. She will walk totally to heel of the lead but put her on it and she pulls like mad!!

Can't help I'm afraid - since we got Jade's flexilead and she can have a good sniff everywhere she doesn't pull us all around the place anymore.xx

Re: Pulling on lead......
A halti works great but you need to practice at home for awhile in the garden 1st, it won't work right from the start until the dog gets used to the feel of it on his head. At 1st the will fight it a bit because it feels strange to them and I would suggest putting it on for a few seconds at a time in a positive manner each time and work the time up. The idea behind it is if he pulls it tightens without hurting and when he quits pulling it loosens...so it won't take him long to figure out it's his own behavior that brings either effect. And like having a halter on a horse, where the head goes the body must follow....no choice in the matter. Whe using the halti it is still a good idea to have your regular collar and lead as well for a back up measure. I personally use a choke chain but there is a right and a wrong direction to put it on and it has to be in the right position on the neck as well. You cannot pull back to correct on a choke chain, it's a short, quick jerk to the side. my best suggestion would be to go to some training classes (good for socialisation as well) to get some hands on help with what you have and have not been doing correctly, some extra tips as well as using the Halti. Clicker training works really well too. I incorporate a bit of everything, every dog is different in what they respond to. His age also indicates a time when he is maturing and trying for dominance which can start out as something as simple as going through a door before you do or not sitting exactly when you ask but can quickly progress upward to other areas of daily life. With a large, young family you really have your hands full and a male dog reaching maturity can be a problem hard to deal with on top of things so try and seek some professional advice before the probs really start so you are prepared. If you are unsure of anything don't hesitate to ask any of us here.

Good, any probs with it let us know so we can make any more suggestions for you. Like you say, walking 5 kids as well you need him to be in total control so you can concentrate on keeping an eye on everyone else. Good luck
